Description
The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the a Doctoral Candidate in the field of Political Science in its Faculty of Language and Literature,Humanities, Arts and Education. The successful candidate will be based in the Identités, Politiques, Sociétés et Espaces research unit, working within the disciplinary Political Science and the interdisciplinary European Governance research groups. Under the direction of Prof. David Howarth, the candidate will have the opportunity of completing a doctoral thesis in the area of European Union Economic Governance / Political Economy. The intended research can address themes such as the recent institutional development of EU economic governance, the ‘Europeanisation’ of national macro-economic policy making, the development of specific policy areas of EU economic governance (notably, but not only, fiscal policy and financial regulation) and, more broadly, political economy approaches to European integration. They offer a 3 years fixed contract (possibility of renewal for a fourth year) where the candidate has the following obligations:
- Completing a doctoral thesis in Political Science on an aspect of EU economic governance and/or political economy of European Integration
- Preparation of scholarly publications(conference papers, articles, etc.) in connection with the research area
- Providing occasional assistance in the organisation of seminars, conferences and other research-related events
- Providing Dr. Howarth with regular administrative help connected to his research (maximum one working day per week)
- Possibility of limited teaching on the Master in European Governance programme
Eligibility
- Master’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, Political Economy or a cognate area. Candidates holding Master’s level qualifications in other areas with significant experience of EU economic policy processes will also be considered.
- Excellent written and spoken proficiency in English. Proficiency in French and/or German would be an advantage.

- A short(6-8 page) thesis proposal. This should define a specific are of research interest and give an indication of the scholarly literature to be engaged, as well as addressing questions of case selection and methodology as appropriate.
