Description
The UCLA Film & Television Archive’s Research and Study Center (ARSC) is pleased to announce the ARSC Visiting Researcher Stipend for 2013. One stipend in the amount of $3,000 is available this year. The purpose of the stipend is to:
- Support the work of scholars by awarding funding to offset expenses associated with a research visit to the UCLA Film & Television Archive in Los Angeles, California (USA).
- Encourage research access to moving image collections held by UCLA Film & Television Archive.
The stipend is to be distributed after the research visit is completed. Payment may take several weeks or longer to process following the completion of the research visit. The research visit must occur during the 2013 calendar year.
UCLA Film & Television Archive holds over 300,000 films and television programs produced from the 1890s to the present. The collection includes independent and studio-produced shorts and feature films, advertising and industrial films, documentaries, local and network TV programming, commercials, news and public affairs broadcasts, and 27 million feet of newsreels produced between 1919 and 1971.
This stipend is made possible by a grant from the Myra Reinhard Family Foundation.
Eligibility
- Scholars from all academic disciplines are eligible and encouraged to apply.
- Applicants must be current students, faculty, or staff at a college or university.
- Proposed research must be for work intended for publication and/or related to a thesis/dissertation.
- Proposed research centrally requires viewing of films or television programming held by the Archive.
Application
Application materials must be submitted online via the online application form HERE no later than July 29, 2013.
To apply online you will need to provide the title of your proposed research project and a detailed narrative description of the proposed research project, including anticipated scholarly output, such as thesis, journal publication, etc. (300-500 words).
To complete your online application, you’ll also need to submit the following required information as individual (separate), PDFs, to arsc@cinema.ucla.edu.
- Filmography of collection materials to be viewed, w/inventory numbers, as compiled via applicant’s research in the Archive’s online catalog HERE.
- Curriculum vitae listing current affiliations and works published (if applicable).
- Brief financial statement indicating projected expense of research visit (airfare, lodging, etc.).
- Students only: A letter of recommendation from a faculty member or departmental advisor.

The selection will be based upon the application’s relevance of Archive holdings to proposed research, the applicant’s research experience as illustrated in their curriculum vitae, and the applicant’s financial need (i.e. projected expense of proposed research visit).
