Description
Estia Agios Nikolaos is a community of people with and without developmental disability where all members live, work and spend their free time together in small family structures. At the moment there are three houses functioning, each one accommodating a “family”. Every house is independent but all follow the methods and principles that the Austrian Dr. Karl Konig put into practice when he founded the first Camphill community.
The volunteers will help with the daily tasks in the village: working together with people with special needs in ecological gardening, workshops and household.
They will be able to learn some gardening as well as getting experience in making jewels, working in our pottery workshop and woodwork in our carpentry. And of course, there is always time for fun activities such as swimming (when the weather allowes it), excursions, walks, music, games …
Responsibilities
Volunteers will:
- support the staff (houseparents) and will help out in the daily care (e.g. taking a shower) of co-workers
- participate in one of the workstations that we run so far: pottery, gardening, jewelry making and woodshop
- be encouraged to create and run new activities. We will support them in every step of the process by guiding them and arranging the space/time/materials needed
- take part in the different leisure activities that we run,such as outings or singing and they will be able to propose their ideas
- give a hand in household taks, e.g. cooking
- do one-to-one activities with some of the people with special needs in the community
- go swimming in the sea during the summer period
- attend the weekly meetings
Eligibility
Volunteers should be:
- willing to live with people with a disability
- interested and willing to learn Greek language
- patient, friendly and open minded
- responsible for their tasks
- enjoy working as part of a team
- take iniciative
- are excited about living in Greece
- have good communication skills
Only young people aged 18-30 will be considered.
Living and working conditions
Volunteers will live in one of the houses in the Estia. All the buildings follow safety measures and have been inspected to make sure that they are properly equipped. Volunteers will receive guidance and training related to their tasks in the Estia to prevent any accident or mistake in their procedures. We hold weekly meetings with all the volunteers and staff to organize the different activities and to discuss any issue that might arise. Volunteers will also have a mentor whit whom they will meet regularly to allow them to have deeper discussions about issues that might concern them and might be hard to talk about in bigger a group.
