German Law Degrees for Students from Caucasus

Deadline: 31 December 2012
Open to: young lawyers from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia
Scholarship: unspecified

Description

Since 2001 the Caucasus Initiative from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has promoted cross-border cooperation between the South Caucasus countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Within this framework the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the further education and networking of young lawyers from the region by financing scholarships for LL.M. studies at a self-chosen university in Germany. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will support GIZ by administering the scholarships.

“Sustainable Development Requires the Rule of Law” – and rule of law requires young, good qualified lawyers from the three South Caucasus countries who advocate the rule of law approach in their home countries.

An LL.M. degree awarded from a German university offers young future executives in judicial and administrative areas the opportunity to:

  • obtain deeper insights in Civil Law traditions and rule of law;
  • consolidate their knowledge in legal methodology;
  • develop their German language knowledge to fluency; and by this higher education,
  • further their professional career.

The participating scholars of the LL.M. program will build an international professional network within the neighbouring South Caucasus countries and with Germany. Therefore in the long term these scholars will be interesting cooperation partners for GIZ and its programs for promoting legal and judicial reforms in their countries – while continuing to introduce their new competencies in their daily work.

Eligibility

The LL.M. scholarship program “Sustainable Development Requires the Rule of Law” is addressed to lawyers from judicial and administrative fields with the following qualifications:

  • interested in obtaining an international degree; and

The participants need to satisfy the prerequisites for admission to prerequisites for admission to their chosen university (except the language certificate) for the LL.M. studies and this in their application. The scholarship also includes a language course from up to six months duration (partly in the home language course country, partly in Germany) which will prepare the participants for the necessary language certificate.
