The Campus for Finance: New Year’s Conference 2013, Vallendar, Germany

Deadline: 30 November 2012
Open to: Students, academics, young professionals and corporates from all over the world
Venue: Vallendar, 17 – 18 January 2013

Description

The financial crisis and the subsequent sovereign debt crisis have dominated the political debate and the media for years and have highly affected large parts of today’s globalized societies. Therefore, financial institutions may no longer operate at will as their future decision making has to take political as well as media’s and society’s repercussions into consideration. Quite obviously, higher equity requirements initiated by Basel III are already reducing the return of financial institutions on their equity capital which significantly affects bank profits but also bonuses and compensation schemes for the executive bodies of banks.  Although a crisis as complex as the current sovereign debt crisis would require a well-thought-out process of problem solving, today’s highly complex and interconnected financial markets as well as the ever-increasing speed of news coverage and diffusion necessitate quick coordination and ample reactions by governments and regulators alike.  News outlets have a substantial impact on the readers’ opinions and expectations regarding their government’s actions. Hence, financial institutions are forced to dramatically enhance the management of their perception in the media. Doing so may contribute to a more balanced media coverage and thus potentially alleviate the regulatory, political and societal pressure.  The Campus for Finance – New Year’s Conference 2013 will discuss the question “Who follows and who leads in today’s financial markets?” as well as “Who rules the world, politicians, institutional investors and bankers or journalists?”, amongst others.
