Description
The Current Science Association invites applications for Science Writing Fellowships, instituted in memory of Professor Sivaraj Ramaseshan for his contributions to the journal Current Science and science writing internships for working in the editorial office of the journal.
Selected candidates will be expected to write for the News, Research News, and General sections of the journal Current Science on a regular basis. Selected candidates will be normally based in Bangalore and are expected to assist the editorial staff in the publication of Current Science.
The internships will be awarded initially for a period of 6 months, extendable for a further period depending on performance.
Eligibility
- Candidates must possess a basic degree in any branch of science. Candidates with postgraduate (after B.Sc.) degree in literature, journalism or mass communication can also apply for the fellowship or internship.
- A flair for writing and wide interest in diverse areas of science with basic computer skills is desirable.
- Candidates have to be not more than 35 years as on 1 March 2012.
- The candidates should not have any other position (full time or part time) that entitles them to any remuneration.
Remuneration
Selected candidates would be offered Rs 12,000–15,000 depending on qualification and experience.

I like the idea of internships dunirg the course year. In my PR class we had a mandatory internship from March-April, which is still a normal study period. This allowed people who were on OSAP and private loans (the students who normally couldn’t afford an unpaid internship) to have the opportunity to take an internship.Due to their public and private funds, they had the means to go to Toronto, Ottawa etc. and get the experience/connections from an internship.Otherwise, yes unpaid internships are a barrier to people who have the skills and want to move up in income or their careers. Unfortunately, I think some private industries prefer to have this barrier in place.Troy Stewart (@troyvstew)
