Description

The Department of International Relations and European Studies of the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic together with our partners are proud to present “Atlantic and Continental Approaches to Energy Security,” a summer school on the topic of energy security.
The aim of this summer school is a comparison of selected energy security related questions from perspectives of the U.S. as well as of European Union states. The summer school will focus on topics related to the electric utility sector, such as the future of nuclear energy; the problem of the use of conventional resources in the transportation sector; the support of renewables; the coal industry and its environmental aspects; the future of smart grids and decentralization of electricity utility sector; etc. This summer school will analyze the differences and compliances of two different ways of dealing with specific energy security related issues. Both the United States of America and European Union face similar problems, but they generally deal with them differently.This summer school also will make an effort to find common positions and overcome certain ideological gaps between the two approaches.

Eligibility

The summer school is open to undergraduate and graduate students of International Relations, Political Science, and European studies, as well as students from technical and economic fields.The primary target of this event is to offer to undergraduate and graduate students of Central and Western Europe and the United States of America the possibility to study the most important and most current topics of this issue from two main perspectives: the continental (Europe) and the U.S.

Venue

The summer school will take place in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Telc from July 29th (Sunday) to August 4th (Saturday). It kicks off with a dinner and networking reception on Sunday, July 29th and end with a breakfast on Saturday, August 4th. The University Center Telc of Masaryk University will host the lectures. The summer school will last five full working days, based on an intensive residential program. Each day will have its own topic and will consist of several lectures on that topic. One of the five days will be devoted to a field trip to the Temelin Nuclear Power Station. Students will be obligated to participate in all workshops, discussions, and seminars. They will work on group projects during the summer school. At the end of the summer school, they will present these projects to the lecturers.

Costs

Only after acceptance will you be provided with complete details regarding the payment of the fee. Consequently, successful candidates must pay the fee via the Shopping Center of the Masaryk University by July 15th, 2012, 24:00 GMT.
The summer school fee is 7500 CZK (EUR 300), payments are accepted in CZK.
The fee covers:

  • Educational program and materials
  • Lecturers and management of the summer school
  • Special events (field trip to the Temelin Nuclear Power Station including transportation, visit to the chateau Telc, social events)
  • Full board

Accommodation is also covered. Participants will have to cover travel arrangements to and from Telc, medical insurance, any visa fees, or any other expenses on their own.
Five scholarships are available reducing the fee to 5000 CZK (EUR 200). Those seeking such scholarships must send a specific scholarship request of max. 400 words along the motivation letter substantiating the claim. Also, an official letter of recommendation from the student’s home institution is likely to help substantiate the scholarship claim. Decisions will be made by the organizers on the basis of the motivation letter, scholarship request, recommendation and CV.

Application

The number of participants is limited to 30. The application package must contain:
A curriculum vitae (personal data: name, surname, nationality, date and place of birth, mailing address; Contact information: telephone, fax, e-mail; Academic and Employment information: information about current and former studies, academic qualifications, current professional or academic position; Language skills: English ideally confirmed by a certificate; Other information such as publication list etc.)

  • Motivation letter (800 words)
  • Scholarship request (400 words; this requirement is obligatory only for students requesting scholarship).
