Estophilus Scholarship for Foreign Researchers, Estonia

Description

The objective of the scholarship Estophilus is to fund research and studies conducted in Estonia by academically advanced students interested in Estonian language and culture. The scholarship is granted by the Council of Academic Studies of Estonian Language and Culture Abroad, involving experts when necessary. The scholarship is financed by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research and administered by the Estonian Institute.

Scholarship

The scholarship is granted for a period from five to ten months. It is designated to cover subsistence expenses, tuition fee and costs directly connected with the research. The scholarship for a period of five months is 2 500 EUR.

The grantee must present to the Estonian Institute a report of about the use of the scholarship during two months after the end of the scholarship period.

Eligibility

Eligible applications are those presented by holders of a doctoral degree or Master’s or Doctoral students who are citizens of a foreign state and are studying at a university abroad, to write a research paper on an Estonia-related topic or to gather material for it. Knowledge of Estonian is an advantage but not a requirement.

Application

In order to apply for the scholarship, the following documents should be presented to the Council:

  • The completed application form
  • CV
  • Certificate confirming the applicant’s status as a postgraduate student or a copy of a document confirming his or her PhD degree
  • Plan of research (max one A4 page)
  • Written confirmation from an Estonian research or development institution to receive the applicant
  • For postgraduate students a recommendation from their research supervisor

The applications and accompanying documents, marked “Estophilus”, should be submitted both by electronic and regular mail to the secretariat of the Council at:

The applications for scholarships  must arrive by e-mail by 1 March or by 1 October at the latest. The signed originals of the application and its appendices should be posted at the latest on the respective abovementioned dates. The Council gives a written response to the applications up to 2 months after the presentation deadline.

The task of the Estonian Institute is to spread information about Estonian society and culture in other countries, further cultural and educational links and organise the teaching of Estonian language and culture outside Estonia.
