Description
Twenty years ago, heads of state met in Rio de Janeiro for the first ever Earth Summit. The conference was a historic event, leading to several environmental treaties. This June, leaders will meet again, hopefully marking another positive turning point for the environment.
If you, like the Rio summit, are around 20 years old (born in 1991, 1992 or 1993), are a citizen of anEEA member or cooperating country, or Greenland, and have passion for the environment, share your vision of how to solve the most pressing environmental problems.
The world has been negotiating during your whole life to slow the environmental damage caused mainly by humans. Despite some good news on many fronts, there is still a lot to do – climate change, deforestation and over-consumption of finite resources are just three of many environmental problems which have accelerated over your lifetime.
Today’s decision makers are faced with the consequences of previous generations’ decisions and actions. You will be faced with the consequences of today’s decisions.
Eligibility
The contest is open to citizens of the 32 EEA member countries, Greenland and 7 West Balkan cooperating countries. The EEA member countries include the 27 EU Member States, together with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey. The West Balkan cooperating countries consist of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo under the UN Security Council Resolution 1244/99.
Contestants must be born between 1 January 1991 and 31 December 1993. Proof of identity will be required from all winners.
Should a winning entry be the result of a team effort, the prize will be awarded to one representative of the team. All team members must meet the above age requirements.
The entry can be in any of the official languages of the countries of eligibility. However all submissions must be subtitled in English, should they be in another language. Entries submitted without translated subtitles will be disregarded.
EEA employees and all members of their immediate family are not eligible to enter the competition.
Prizes
An award ceremony will take place on World Environment Day, in Copenhagen. The EEA will cover travel expenses and accommodation for one night for all the winners.
There will be three cash awards.
- 1st place: €3000 and plaque
- 2nd place: €2000 and plaque
- 3rd place: €1000 and plaque
- Buzz Prize winner: plaque
The Buzz Prize winner will receive an honourable mention and a trip to Copenhagen to the awards ceremony on 5 June 2012. Should the Buzz Prize winner be one of the top three places, the contestant with the next highest number of votes who has not been selected in the top three will be selected instead. The selection will be made on the basis of the number of Likes on the specially-designated website. In the case of two videos both having the same number of votes, the EEA pre-selection committee will have the final decision.
The individual recipients of prize money will be responsible for the tax implications of their winnings.
The winners will be notified by email therefore it is crucial to provide correct contact information. Due to the potentially large volume of videos submitted only those shortlisted will be notified.
It is the responsibility of the winners to have personal documents (such as passport, national ID card, or visa) necessary to travel to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Instructions detailing how to submit your videos electronically will be provided shortly prior to the submissions start date, 1 March, 2012 in this space.
Entry is free. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of the Terms and Conditions as specified on the Official Website.
Submission ends at midnight (CET) 2 April 2012. Late entries will not be accepted.
No responsibility is assumed on the part of the EEA for late entries or corrupted files. Incomplete entries or entries that do not comply with the above formal specifications will be automatically disqualified. Submission which do not relate to the topic will be automatically disqualified.
Due to the high volume of last-minute entries, we advise you to submit your entry well in advance of the submission deadline.
Video requirements
- Length: no less than 30 seconds, and no more than 2 minutes (including credits, should those be featured)
- Frame aspect ratio: 16:9
- Short title
- A short description of the video (approx. 50 words)
- No endorsement of products or services
- No obscene, violent, racist or defamatory content or content of a sexual nature
Note: Winners may be requested to provide a high resolution version of their videos for promotional use.
