Deadline: 1 December 2011
Open to: university or think tank-based acacemics in all disciplines, creative artists at all career stages with a record of significant achievement in their fields, practitioners at a least in their mid-career stage
A quiet setting for focused work. A place to connect with dynamic innovators from across the globe. A multi-sectoral community committed to solving the greatest challenges facing our world.
The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, through conferences and residency programs, supports the work of scholars, artists, thought leaders, policymakers and practitioners who share in the Foundation’s pioneering mission to “promote the well-being of humanity.” The Center has a record of major impact, from meetings that led to the Green Revolution and the Global AIDS vaccine initiative, to residencies that furthered Michael Ondaatje’s work on The English Patient and Bill T. Jones’ choreography. This legacy, the serene work environment on the shore of Lake Como in northern Italy, the diverse groups of people, and the promise of future achievements makes Bellagio an inspiring and productive forum for fostering positive change.
The Bellagio Residency program offers academic writing, arts and literary arts, and practitioner residencies in a serene setting conducive to focused, goal-oriented work, and the unparalleled opportunity to establish new connections with fellow residents from a stimulating array of disciplines and geographies. The Bellagio Center community generates new knowledge to solve some of the most complex issues facing our world and creates art that inspires reflection, understanding, and imagination.
There are three types of residencies:
- Academic Writing Residency (Researchers in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and other academic disciplines)
- Arts & Literary Arts Residency (Artists, composers, fiction and non-fiction writers)
- Practitioner Residency
Academic Writing Residency
Writing residencies typically last four weeks. The program is especially interested in applicants whose work contributes to the well-being of humanity or in some way connects with the Rockefeller Foundation’s issue areas. The Center welcomes collaborative residencies for two to four people working on the same project.
Collegial interaction with other residents is an integral dimension of the Bellagio experience. Meals and informal presentations of residents’ work afford an opportunity for dynamic discussions and engagement within and across disciplines. During special dinners, residents often interact with participants in international conferences hosted in other buildings on the Center’s grounds to help build connections and to help inform on one another’s work.
Disciplines & Type of Work
Residencies are open to university or think tank-based acacemics in all disciplines. Projects in all fields are welcome, but there is particular interest in innovative projects that focus on improving the well-being of humankind or on addressing one or more of the Rockefeller Foundation’s five interconnected issue areas: basic survival safeguards, global health, climate and environment, urbanization, social and economic security. Please note that Bellagio Center residencies cannot be used to work on doctoral dissertations or textbooks.
Length of Stay
Writing residencies last for a period of up to four weeks.
Team Residencies
The Center welcomes collaborative residencies for up to four people working on the same project. The Bellagio Center prefers team projects that bring residents together from different geographies, institutions or disciplines since this reinforces the Center’s goal of establishing new connections.

Applicants may apply up to three times.
Those who have held residencies (or spouses who accompanied residents for more than one week) must wait five years before reapplying. There is a lifetime limit of two residencies.
