Online Course “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence”

Deadline: 9 October 2011
Open to: Students interested or studying in a related field
Costs: The course is free of charge

A bold experiment in distributed education, “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” will be offered free and online to students worldwide from October 10th to December 18th 2011. The course will include feedback on progress and a statement of accomplishment. Taught by Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig, the curriculum draws from that used in Stanford’s introductory Artificial Intelligence course. The instructors will offer similar materials, assignments, and exams.

Artificial Intelligence is the science of making computer software that reasons about the world around it. Humanoid robots, Google Gogglesself-driving cars, even software that suggests music you might like to hear are all examples of AI. In this class, you will learn how to create this software from two of the leaders in the field. Class begins October 10. Details on the course, including a syllabus are available here.

A high speed internet connection is recommended as most of the course content will be video based.

English captions of all the course lectures will be provided, as well as  tools to help translate the class into other languages.

The course runs from the 10th of October through the 18th of December, 2011. Enrollment will be open until the 9th of October.

Due to its popularity this class will be offered in two tracks:

  • the basic track – in which you watch lectures and answer basic quizzes. This is not the full course. But you will still learn all the basics of AI.
  • the advanced track – is the full class, which aspires to be of Stanford difficulty. You do homework assignments and take exams.

In both cases, you will receive a statement of accomplishment signed by both lecturers upon completion of this course. If you enroll for the advanced track now, you can always switch back to the basic track.

For the advanced track only: Please make sure you have time to do the homework assignments and to participate in the exams. The exams will be offered within a 24 hour period around Nov 19/20 (midterm exam) and Dec 17/18 (final exam). Please make sure you are available during those days. The actual exams will only take 4 hours and there is flexibility when you start the exam within these dates, but once you begin you must complete the exam in 4 hours. See the full course schedule.
