American Copy Editors Society Scholarships 2012, USA

The ACES Education Fund, an affiliate of the American Copy Editors Society, offers scholarships to juniors, seniors and grad students interested in careers in copy editing. The top candidate will be awarded the $2,500 Aubespin scholarship, named for Merv Aubespin, a longtime journalist, former president of the National Association of Black Journalists and the “godfather” of ACES. At least four other candidates will receive scholarships of $1,000 each. All the winners will be granted free registration for the ACES 2012 national conference in New Orleans. Some financial aid for winners to travel to the conference may be available as well.
Among the criteria used by judges are commitment to copy editing as a career, work experience in copy editing and abilities in copy editing, as demonstrated by examples and recommendations.

Application process
Interested applicants should submit the following documents: (FIVE copies of each of the following items)
Application form
-A list of course work relevant to copy editing (you may include courses outside journalism)
-A list of your copy editing experience
-An essay on what you think makes a good editor and why you want to be a copy editor ( no more than 750 words; double-spaced)
-Two recommendation letters (one from a faculty member or adviser at your college and one from someone on a college or professional publication)
-Copies of five to 10 headlines you have written
-A copy of a story you’ve edited that demonstrates your ability. Include an explanation of the changes you made in the story, along with the circumstances under which it was edited (tight deadline, etc.)
-Material that appeared online may be downloaded to a CD; send five CDs with your entry.

You must submit five packets that include ALL materials. Send them in one mailing, please. If your recommendation letters are coming separately, please note that in your packets. Applications should be submitted no later than  November 15, 2011, to:
