  1. I have been a student of Bucharest Summer University 2010 and I would like to share some insights for those interested.

One thing I liked about BSU was that it provides outsiders with an honest look into Romania – and I am saying this as a Romanian.

What I did not like was, among others, that I could not receive a certificate attesting my participation in the school and that it bears 5 ECTS credits. This was prominently advertised on the website, but it apparently was only available to students of the Bucharest University of Economics – ASE. The sad part was that I specifically asked about this more than a couple of times and I was either lied or ignored by the student organizers.

Another thing that was misrepresented on the website was the accommodation offered to participants. The three star hotel turned out to be a youth hostel, and I was happy I could arrange alternative accommodation on my own, as I was offered a three-bed 12 sqm room to share with two (otherwise more than lovely) colleagues.

I was appalled by the quality of the speakers, most of whom had a very poor grasp of the English language, and quite a few of whom failed to be interesting in any way (form, style, content, relevancy, interactivity etc.) – of course, last year the topic was different, but I would definitely not bet on much-needed radical improvements on this chapter.

There are many other minor issues that have come up during the two weeks, but I would really be nitpicking to mention them here.

A final remark of a thing I liked would mention the entertainment. The long-weekend and the several evenings out were quite well organized, well above the average of the two-weeks event.

Surely, if they would scrap the academics and academic organization part, the whole thing would be awesome – too bad it would be nothing of a summer school then.

I am fully convinced there are better, more interesting summer schools out there for the young energy scholars, and as I am convinced that this article has intelligent readers, I would not recommend BSU to any of you.

    Yours truly,

    Radu

P.S.: I hereby grant the right for the admin of this page to forward my email address to those interested in finding out more about BSU, I would love to chat with them.

    1. Hi Radu,

I am Pia, a graduate of BS Accountancy and has plans of pursuing masteral degree abroad. I am from Philippines and I wanna attend this kind of summer programs there in Romania as I also have a friend that I wanted to meet there. Aside from BSU, do you know any activity similar that you can recommend aside from this one? 🙂

I would really appreciate some more insights. Thank you so much in advance.

      -Pia

  2. Hi Pia,

sorry for the late reply, I did not follow the topic.

I know of only one other summer school in Romania this year – http://www.ieis.lu/courses/leaflet%20Vama%20Veche… – but I have no idea if it is any good, and it might not fall within your area of interest.

Most of the summer schools in Romania are in Romanian, unfortunately. Perhaps browsing this website might help, some of the entries are in English: http://www.studentie.ro/studentclub/index.php?mod

    Hope I've helped!
