Thematic priority of the year 2011:
Rethinking Belarus: Twenty Years of Independence
Consortium of Belarusian and Lithuanian organizations under the auspices of the Vytautas Magnus University and the Institute “Political Sphere” (Belarus) is organizing the First International Congress of Belarusian Studies (Social Sciences), which will take place in Kaunas on September 23-25, 2011. VMU researchers and scholars of sociology, political science, history and history of ideas are offered to participate.
The Congress will be attended by more than a hundred scholars and researchers from around the world who are engaged in researches on Belarus and East-Central Europe. The approached topics will include regional development issues, foreign policy of Belarus and other relevant issues.
The event will be organized in six panels:
- Belarus and the system of regional cooperation; Belarusian model 1991-2011: summary of two decades of development;
- Soviet past in the regional perspective: (de-) (neo-) (post-) Sovietization;
- Grand Duchy of Lithuania: the fact and the idea; a nation in Central and Eastern Europe: community and identity;
- Belarusian society and culture: strategies in the globalized world.
Three topics are suggested for public discussions: Belarus and the Eastern Partnership initiative; elections in Belarus, 2008-2010: consequences and perspectives; Belarus-Lithuania relations: state, perspectives and obstacles.
The main working languages of the Congress are Belarusian, English and Lithuanian, with simultaneous translation provided for these languages during plenary sessions and joint meetings. Additional languages of communication are Russian and Polish. The speakers are invited to submit their thesis and make their panel presentations in Belarusian, English, Lithuanian, Polish or Russian language. Speakers will have opportunity to publish their presentations in a compendium of abstracts or as individual articles.
Costs
In addition to providing visa support, the organizers will also cover accommodation costs and (for participants from Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine) travel expenses.
Application Process
The applicants should submit their CV (in Belarusian, English, Lithuanian or other working language), the thesis of their presentation (400 words or less in any working language) and an indication whether they will need visa support to icbs@palityka.org. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2011.
