The Open Society Foundations, Maastricht University (The Netherlands) and Aarhus University (Denmark) invite applications for scholarships in the field of European Studies. Applicants will be able to apply for one of the three master courses offered at Maastricht University – the MA in European Studies, MA in Analysing Europe and the MA in European Public Affairs; or for the MA in European Studies at the University of Aarhus. Candidates may apply to one or maximum two of the courses listed above, with the first choice of course clearly stated.
Scholarships at Maastricht University are offered for maximum 18 months and include 12 months of full time study on the master course and a six-month internship after the completion of the course.
Scholarships at Aarhus University are offered for maximum 24 months and are for full time study on the master course program. Internships of two to three months may be carried out during the summer break.
Successful applicants will be expected to attend a one-month preparatory academic writing summer school in July 2011. The academic program at Maastricht and Aarhus universities will start on the 1st of September 2011.
On completion of the scholarship, scholars are expected to return to their home country to resume their studies or work there.
Eligibility
The scholarships are open for applicants from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and the Ukraine. Applicants should have outstanding relevant academic qualifications and good English skills.
Scholarship
Each scholarship covers the tuition fees at the host university and a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only) for the duration of the scholarship and return air travel from the scholar’s home country.
Application Process
You are strongly encouraged to visit the Maastricht University and Aarhus University websites before you make your application in order to find out more about the contents and structure of the courses and the study process at the two universities:
Maastricht University, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Aarhus University, MA in European Studies Program
Applicants can apply to both universities, but they will need to submit two separate applications, one for Aarhus and one for Maastricht. The two universities have different application forms and the attached documents which have “Maastricht” or “Aarhus” in the title should be used by the applicants depending on which university they want to apply to.
The courses offered at Maastricht and Aarhus are very different in the approaches they use to study European Studies, format and structure. Therefore, the candidates are strongly encouraged to inform themselves very well before they decide which course to apply for: throughout the selection process, candidates should be able to justify very well their choice of course and demonstrate their suitability for the given course in terms of their background and future plans.

Applicants for courses based at Maastricht University should complete the relevant Scholarship Application form provided at the local Educational Advising Centre. Please pay attention that there are three different application forms for each of the three courses based at Maastricht University.
