International Moot Competition on Maritime Arbitration (IMCMA) is a competition for undergraduate and postgraduate law students. The moot problem typically involves a commercial shipping dispute, which is to be determined by an arbitral panel according to the LMAA Terms, or some other accepted set of arbitral rules. The problem is designed to incorporate difficult but practical issues of arbitration law as well as issues of substantive maritime law. The competition receives strong support from the judiciary and members of the legal, arbitration and maritime professions.

The Problem is distributed in September via official website. Teams are to prepare memoranda for both Claimant and Respondent. The oral arguments take place in Odessa – Ukraine, in the third week of March.

The facts of this year’s Moot Competition question forces the competitors to considers the appropriate substantives rules which requires to interpret the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA), and the question of whether a foreign arbitration clause in a bill of lading is invalid under COGSA.

Since Maritime Arbitration is an increasingly important aspect of all Country’s legal systems, it is crucial for young lawyers to acquaint themselves with the way the Maritime Disputes are solved through means of Arbitration and revitalizing the shipping industry by making a great use of all the talents and capacities to show that we are great ‘Maritime Lawyer”.

Apart from the Competition The Organizing Committee will give the competitors, Judges and Arbitrators or audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and specific delights of the City of Odessa and to partake of the Excellence provided by the Ukrainian Cuisine.

An enjoyable social program accompanies the competition to enable students to meet with senior members of the profession and the maritime industry and to forge contacts with students from other law schools.

The application for the Moot Competition will be open till 20 January 2010.
