Utrecht University

Utrecht University is founded in 1636 and located in the heart of the Netherlands. The UU offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programmes, the latter including many English-taught programmes. There are almost 30,000 students at Utrecht University and 8,500 members of staff. Every year, more than 2,000 international students and researchers stay in Utrecht for variable periods of time. The English curriculum consists of 4 Bachelor’s degree programmes, 109 Master’s degree programmes, some 200 certificate courses, and more than 75 Summer School courses.

Studying

The University has been located in Utrecht’s historical, medieval town centre. The inner city campus comprises of two faculties. The other faculties are situated at the Uithof Campus, east of the town centre. The Faculty of Medicine is co-governed by University Medical Center Utrecht. A third campus, just outside the town centre, is home to University College Utrecht, Utrecht University’s international undergraduate college.

International orientation

Utrecht University has many exchange programmes for students, staff and scientists, and 50 per cent of the graduate programmes are taught in English. Utrecht Summer School is specifically aimed at international students, offering over 60 academic courses.

Every year, the graduate and exchange programmes attract some 1,900 international students from 125 different countries. Also teachers from abroad are invited to participate in these programmes, thus contributing to an international learning environment for Dutch students as well.

International students who arrive in Utrecht can fall back on dedicated facilities, such as the Utrecht Feel at Home Service, which, among other things, offers help in finding accommodation and making visa applications.

Scholarship information

Utrecht University set up its own scholarship fund: the Utrecht Excellence Scholarships. This scholarship is for outstanding prospective students who are applying for a Bachelor’s programme in Economics or at University College Utrecht or for a specific master programme.
