Matej Bel University (UMB) is a university in the central Slovak town Banska Bystrica. UMB was established in 1992 after the integration of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Economics. Banska Bystrica has a long tradition in schooling and culture. It is named after Matej Bel, an outstanding Hungarian-Slovak scholar in the 18th century. Matej Bel University represents a significant and modern scientific research and educational institution that is one of the biggest universities in Slovakia. Matej Bel University is making important contributions to the European area of education and research (for which it is a part of), providing both high-quality university education as well as a wide spectrum of further education adequate to the needs of practical life.
