Call to Direct a Workshop

The Twelfth Mediterranean Research Meeting, will take place near Florence (Italy) on 6 – 9 April 2011.
Reaching its Twelfth Session, the Mediterranean Research Meeting:
· is committed to foster theoretical and empirical research and dialogue among scholars
from countries across the Mediterranean, and with Mediterranean issue concerns;
· stresses its aim to reach as wide as possible coverage of all Mediterranean areas, with topics relating to the Middle East, North Africa, Southern and South-Eastern Europe, their mutual relationships and their relations with Europe;
· focuses attention on legal, historical, economic and socio-political issues;
· aims to enable junior scholars to meet more senior scholars in an interactive environment, and to promote further research collaboration;
· encourages the publication and dissemination of this research in edited volumes, thematic issues of learned journals, and Mediterranean Programme Working Papers.
Scholars are invited to send applications to jointly direct a workshop.
Up to twenty workshop proposals will be selected by a scientific programme committee at the EUI which may solicit external peer advice. Applicants will be informed about the selection results by 15 of April 2010.
Eligibility of Workshop Directors
Each workshop will be jointly run by two workshop directors who should come from different institutions and have different national backgrounds. Ideally, at least one director should be based in the Middle East, North Africa, or South-Eastern Europe.
Priority will be given to candidates who have not recently directed a MRM workshop.
Tasks of Workshop Directors
Workshop directors are expected to:
• solicit potential workshop participants to apply to the call for papers;
• select the papers to be accepted at the workshop;
• write individual papers or a joint paper on the theme of the workshop;
• participate in all events of the MRM;
• propose workshop papers for publication in the Mediterranean Programme RSCAS-EUI
Working Papers series.
Workshop directors will:
• be reimbursed for their travel expenses on the basis of the most appropriate and cost effective means of transport to and from Florence;
• be accommodated for four nights in the hotel venue of the MRM and be offered scheduled meals.
Applications should be made jointly by two directors and should include
• Workshop abstract (approximately 250 words in English).
• Workshop proposal of 3-5 pages, in English or French. The proposal should provide the
intellectual rationale of the workshop explaining how it relates to existing research in the area and how it can enhance the state-of-the-art; it should also indicate the kind of potential participants.
• Curricula Vitae of the workshop directors.
