The University of Minho is founded in 1973 as a public university. It belongs to the group of so called “New Universities” that in the last years significantly changed the landscape of higher education in Portugal.
This University is situated in the region of Minho, famous for the outstanding economic activity and by the youth of its population. It could be said that University of Minho has played the role of driving vehicle for the development of the region.
It has more than 15,000 students (2,000 of those are postgraduate students) and 1200 professors and it is considered as one of bigger universities in Portugal.
International students
At University of Minho there not many possibilities for studying on other languages than Portuguese. Most of the classes are taught in Portuguese and students are expected to be fluent enough to be able to follow them. Exams can be held in another language depending on agreement between the student and the lecturer. There is the possibility of developing individual work/project/seminar with supervision in a foreign language common to the supervisor and the student.
In the beginning of each semester the International Relations Office (GRI) organises a Portuguese Language Course of about 60 hours, for all exchange students. It is aimed at providing the basic tools of the Portuguese language in order to make things easier for studying with us.

Scholarships
Scholarships are reserved for students who have financial needs. Grant for study concerns students economically debilitated whose familiar aggregate can not by it self face charges inherent University frequency.
