New Bulgarian University

newbulgarian_logoNew Bulgarian University was founded on 18 September 1991 as a private institution of higher education based in Sofia, Bulgaria. The idea for creating the New Bulgarian University was initiated by several Bulgarian intellectuals who were attempting to modernize Bulgarian higher education, but at the same time preserve its traditions.
At the New Bulgarian University students can acquire degrees in Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs, as well as programs for a “Specialist” degree. They can be educated in the fields of art, languages, politics, management, network technologies, etc. It is possible to study on a regular basis or through distant learning.

How to apply

NBU welcomes international students. The term ‘international student’ applies to students without a Bulgarian citizenship. In order to apply students need to submit the following documents: a completed application form, secondary education diploma for Bachelor degree students or Bachelor diploma for students enrolling in a Master’s or doctoral studies, a medical certificate, a legal document confirming the right of the candidate to continue his/her education, two letters of recommendation, and some additional documents listed on the official website

Students can apply during the following application periods:
For citizens from non EU member countries
•    31 July – for Full time undergraduate students, Full time graduate students, PhD students, Transfer students
•    20 December – for Full time graduate students who speak fluent Bulgarian, PhD students
For citizens from EU member countries
•    31 August – for Full time undergraduate students, Full time graduate students, PhD students, Transfer students
•    31 January – for Full time graduate students who speak fluent Bulgarian, PhD students
•    31 August or 31 January – for Visiting students and Erasmus students

Exchange students and scholarships

New Bulgarian University partakes in EU programs such as the ERASMUS, TEMPUS, LEONARDO, etc. The Higher Education Support Program of Open Society Institute, Budapest (HESP) is also one of the greatest NBU partners.
The University has become part of the international university community through the achieved academic mobility of teachers and students, through its participation in bilateral collaborations, through joint projects, through membership in significant world educational institutions. New Bulgarian University is the exclusive representative for Bulgaria of The Open University (United Kingdom) in the field of distance education. Additionally, New Bulgarian University is a full member of the Francophone University Agency (AUF).

New Bulgarian University is a member of competent international organizations and it plays an important role for the comparison of studies at the University with the world standards: the European University Association (EUA), the International Education Institute (IET), the European Association of International Education (EAIE), the International Association of Semiotic Studies (IASS), the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), the network of Institutes and Schools on Public Administration in Central and Eastern Europe (NISPASee), the European Consortium on Political Studies, the International PR Organization (IPRA), Leonardo international network for academic mobility (LEO-NET), the Informal European Theatre Meeting (IETM), the European Association of Students in Theater (EAST), the European League of Institutes of Arts (ELIA), etc.
