ICWA Fellowship Program

Deadline: 15 June 2019
Open to: candidates all over the world under 36 y/o
Benefits: fully funded

Description

The Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA) is accepting letters of interest for two-year independent writing fellowships abroad from exceptional candidates interested in foreign affairs or cultures.

ICWA boosts US understanding of foreign affairs through an intensive two-year cultural-immersion program crafted over 90 years. The Institute identifies and cultivates rare potential by immersing promising young professionals in the study of countries, regions and globally important issues, positioning them to become leaders in their fields who go on to inform the American public debate. The institute has helped transform the lives and advance the careers of emerging writers, scholars and diplomats, as well as experts in the fields of policy, business and social activism.

A prestigious ICWA fellowship provides recipients with the rare gift of time and freedom to explore regions and topics, expanding their knowledge at formative times in their lives, and sharing their self-directed, independent research through monthly newsletters and participation in Institute events.

Eligibility

– Candidates must be under 36 years of age at the time of the due date for the initial letter of interest;

– Although the institute does not set minimum educational standards, applicants must have excellent written and spoken English-language skills and have completed the current phase of their formal education. They do not accept applications from currently enrolled undergraduate students;

– ICWA also expects candidates to have the necessary language skills to allow to them to carry out their proposed project in their country of choice;

– U.S. citizenship is not a requirement, but candidates must show strong and credible ties to US society.

Benefits

ICWA provides full financial support for its fellows and their immediate, accompanying families. Fellows do not receive salaries; the institute gives them sufficient funding to cover their expenses, enabling them to fulfill the purposes of the fellowship and allowing them and their families (if accompanying the fellowship) to live in good health and reasonable comfort. “Full financial support” does not mean unlimited financial support; fellows are expected to live and spend modestly.

How to apply?

Those interested in applying for an Institute of Current World Affairs Fellowship should send an initial Letter of Interest and a resume or CV in English to the Institute via email (apply@icwa.org.). The post is also accepted in the application process.

In your letter of interest, state what you would do if you had a two-year, self-designed fellowship overseas and why you’re the right person to carry it out. There is no fixed length for the letter of interest. Please indicate your age, as applicants must be under the age of 36 at the time that the letter of interest is due.

The strongest applicants will be invited to submit a more detailed application.

Selected fellows are expected to depart for their fellowships within six months of their selection.
