E.MA: EIUC’s Main Teaching Programme

Description

The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA) – organised by the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) – is:

  • An intensive one-year course aimed at educating up to 100 professionals annually in the field of human rights and democratisation;
  • An action- and policy-oriented approach to learning that combines legal, political, historical, anthropological, and philosophical perspectives with skills building activities;
  • An in-depth study of the following areas: Human Rights Institutions, Mechanisms and Standards; Human Rights in Context: Historical, Philosophical, Religious and Anthropological Perspectives; Democratisation; Human Rights and Globalisation; Human Rights and Security;
  • study trip to familiarize with human rights field work;
  • Specialised supervised research for the Master’s thesis in one of the 41 participating universities;
  • A Joint Degree conferred by prestigious European universities;
  • The foundation for a successful career in national, international, governmental, inter- and non-governmental organisations, as well as academic institutions dealing with human rights and democratisation.

E.MA is both a residential and an exchange programme:

Admission Criteria

E.MA is open to EU and non-EU citizens. The criteria used during the selection process are: academic ability and background; experience; language competence and motivation.

Applicants are required to hold a university degree of a high standard in a field relevant to human rights, including disciplines in law, social sciences and the humanities and must have a minimum of 180 ECTS (Bachelor/General Degree).

Candidatures can be considered as long as the applicant has obtained a degree corresponding to:

  • 180 ECTS credits (generally a 3-year course) or
  • 240 ECTS credits (generally a 4-year course) or
  • A combination of a degree of 180 ECTS and relevant proven additional experience or studies (such as 1-year MA or summer courses)

Costs and Funding

The amount of the tuition fee for the academic year 2014/2015 is €4900 (plus enrolment fee of €150). Tuition fees cover the following: all courses of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation, both in the first and second semesters; the reading materials for the first semester; tutorship; access to the EIUC specialised library; individual access to our closed e-learning environment; use of available IT facilities, field trip.

Students bear the responsibility to secure their full living and housing expenses prior to their arrival in Venice (estimated at a minimum of €850 per month).

Funding: EIUC offers financial support in the form of a partial contribution towards living expenses and/or a full or partial tuition waiver. This type of financial support is awarded to a limited number of students (up to 10) on the basis of academic achievement, need and geographical distribution.

How to Apply?

At the moment, you can proceed and apply for the second round of applications for the MA program. You can start application process HERE. Before starting the application, assure that you fulfill the admission criteria and then you can proceed to step 1 – paying the application processing fee.

Once you proceed to step 2 you should assure you are using the application form available (there are separate forms depending whether you intend to apply for financial help from EIUC or not. The entire application, including the motivation and the CV has to be submitted in English. Apply latest by 15 March, 2015.
