Description

The Guardian of London, England is looking for aspiring Digital Journalists to join them for 12 months to gain broad exposure to all aspects of their digital first approach to journalism.

They are particularly keen to encourage individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Therefore, formal journalism qualifications are not essential for these contracts. They are looking for proven experience in digital journalism (that might include blogging, social media, multimedia or coding) and a passion for pursuing a digital media career.

Starting in October, this scheme offers experience on The Guardian’s digital production and section teams as well as placements with either their digital interactive, multimedia, social media or data teams (depending on your interests and based on the needs of their newsroom).

The scheme is designed to equip the successful candidates with the skills to pursue a career in digital journalism. Applicants must be aware that this opportunity is offered on a one year fixed term contract basis only and there is no guarantee of a staff job at the end of this scheme.

A knowledge and understanding of news and current affairs is key. You will need to demonstrate a keen interest in digital journalism. If you already have journalism qualifications you can apply, but the scheme is designed for people who don’t necessarily have journalistic qualifications but who have some digital journalism experience.

This scheme is not for complete beginners. You must have evidence of working in digital journalism. One of their aims is to find talented and creative people.

The scheme is designed to equip the successful candidates with the skills to pursue a career in digital journalism. You will be able to compete for a role at GNM after nine months on the scheme, should an appropriate vacancy become available. Applicants must be aware that this opportunity is offered on a one-year fixed-term contract basis only and there is no guarantee of a staff job at the end of this scheme.

Eligibility

Please note that legislation dictates that all non-EU nationals are required to be in possession of a valid work permit before they can take up employment. They are legally obliged to ask you to provide evidence of your right to work in the EU. If you are successful with your application they will ask you to provide appropriate documents, such as your Passport, Visa, Work Permit or Birth Certificate in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996.

Candidates must have:

  • Demonstrable experience in digital journalism (could include blogging, social media, multimedia, coding)
  • A portfolio of digital journalism/writing/work
  • Commitment to a digital media career
  • High level knowledge of current affairs
  • A solid understanding and appreciation of our values and purpose
  • A relevant particular skill or life experience that may improve the diversity of our coverage

Remuneration

This position will be salaried for the 12 month fixed term contract. The scheme will start in October 2013. If you cannot start on this date, they are unable to accept your application. It’s a year-long scheme ending in September 2014.

You will work daytime shifts Monday to Friday. To experience the full breadth of digital journalism at GNM, there may be a few occasions where you work evening/night shifts or weekends. You will be based in the London Kings Place office, but you may have the opportunity to work with one of our regional reporters for a short period of time.
